The images below are Shadra's illustrations of "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," a poem written by James Weldon Johnson and set to music by his brother, Rosamond. Shadra's intention in illustrating this song was to clarify its meaning for young people and at the same time enrich its meaning for older generations. She infused the project with the idea of movement and migration with the intent of taking the viewer on a visual journey throughout the rich tapestry of African-American culture.
