Use these brackets to help students focus their ideas. The brackets below vary in size, but all work just like the brackets used during basketball's final four frenzy. Students make two lists on the outside blanks on either side of the page. Then they compare the ideas in pairs until they have half as many. They repeat this process until there is only one idea left. This exercise can help students figure out what to write about, the main idea of a text, or any problem where they need to consider a lot of options and arrive at one they think is best. While some of the brackets below have themes, you can use any of them to explore any topic.
